York scored six penalties in a chaotic final seven minutes to earn a 1-1 draw with Rotherham in the EFL Trophy Group North on Tuesday. The result came after a late surge of spot-kicks that saw the teams convert a combined 11 attempts in a bizarre finish.
Zech Medley gave York the lead just before half-time, finishing from an Arthur Read assist in the 44th minute. Rotherham levelled through Jili Buyabu in the 57th minute, setting the stage for the late drama. The penalty sequence began in the 91st minute when Read scored for York, only for Paul Mullin to reply instantly for the visitors.
Dipo Akinyemi and Jayce Fitzgerald traded goals, followed by Ethan Stiver and Joe Rafferty. Jovan Malcolm missed a chance for York at 95 minutes, but Ben Farrar scored at 96 minutes to make it 6-6 from the spot before Buyabu netted his second penalty of the night for Rotherham. The draw leaves York seventh in League Two with 11 points from seven games.
Manager S. Lindsey selected a 3-4-2-1 formation, with George Sykes-Kenworthy in goal. The team dominated possession with 56 percent and created more chances, registering 11 shots to Rotherham's eight. Ashley Palmer received the game's only yellow card for a foul in the 50th minute.
The result extends York's recent run to one win, two draws and two losses in their last five matches across all competitions. Their next challenge is a League Two fixture at home against fourth-placed Gillingham on Saturday.
