York City Legends Win Big in Charity Match Against Leeds United Legends
York City Legends played out an action-packed 5-3 win over Leeds United Legends in a charity match on Sunday, raising funds for Menfulness and the York City Football Club Foundation. Founded by York City Vice-President Rob McDermid and the original Yorkie the Lion Steve Ovenden, the York City Legends played their third charity match on Saturday when facing Leeds United Legends.
Having already raised over £5,000 at previous events, in games against Easingwold Old Boys and Bradford City Veterans, it was another resounding success on Sunday with what is believed to be the biggest crowd yet. A brilliant afternoon for the City Legends saw them storm into a first-half lead, with Clayton Donaldson bagging a sensational hat-trick. 'The Don', who now works as York City's Head of Development, scored 25 goals in 64 appearances during a prolific spell for the Minstermen, and he added a fourth in the Legends match for the cherry on top.
Michael Coulson scored York's fifth on the day, whilst goals for Leeds came from a Ross McCormack brace, and an Andy Couzens strike. Jamie Reed assisted Donaldson's first goal, whilst Graeme Law and Paddy McLaughlin grabbed two assists each on the day.
Away from the pitch, the day raised money for York-based men's mental health charity Menfulness, and for the York City Football Club Foundation. Matty Lewis, Menfulness Trustee, previously told The Press: "We’re delighted to have been selected as charity partner for the York City Legends v Leeds Utd Legends fixture at Tadcaster on Sunday.
"We know that sport brings the world together, but also that we can collectively do more to promote the conversation around men’s mental health. "To have a presence in front of that audience will make a real difference in breaking the stigma that still exists, and we’re so grateful to all involved for choosing us."
