Stuart Maynard is the frontrunner to become the new manager of Scunthorpe United. The former York City boss is in line for a swift return to the National League after his controversial summer departure from Bootham Crescent.
Maynard was sacked by York in the summer just three months after guiding the club to the National League title. He oversaw 102 of the 108 points in a record-breaking season, which was sealed by a last-gasp Josh Stones goal against Rochdale. He was replaced by Scott Lindsey, who has since led York to seventh place in League Two with 20 points from 14 games, a record of five wins, five draws and four losses. The team's form has dipped recently, however, with back-to-back heavy defeats to Grimsby Town and Barnet leaving them with one win in their last five matches, a run of two defeats and two draws. Their recent form reads one win, two draws and two defeats, with the last two results being a 5-2 loss at Grimsby and a 3-1 defeat at Barnet. In that heavy loss at Grimsby, Alex Hunt and Jack Hunt scored for York, but the side has now conceded 21 goals this season while scoring 24. They now sit 11 points behind the league leaders.
Scunthorpe vacancy
Scunthorpe United are searching for a new manager after parting ways with Andy Butler following a 4-1 defeat to Tamworth. The Iron are bottom of the National League table with just 10 points from 14 matches and have lost their last four games. Maynard has emerged as the leading candidate for the role, with the challenge for any new boss being immense as the club sits 12 points from safety.
Other names linked with the position include Luke Williams, Darren Ferguson, Andy Woodman and Kevin Maher. Maynard is also reportedly in the frame for the vacant League One job at Bromley, where the club has held talks with former England defender Ashley Cole.
Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince previously commented on his club's own search, saying they would "see how it goes" without a manager after Robbie Savage's departure. Maynard had also been linked with that role earlier in the season.
York's current focus
Their opponents currently sit 19th in the table.
