Scott Lindsey is asking for patience as his York City side look to turn promising performances into more goals. The manager believes a deeper understanding of match data is the key to unlocking greater attacking returns for the League Two club.
York sit ninth in the table with eight points from their opening five matches back in the Football League. They have scored nine goals but taken just one point from two away games, including last weekend's 1-1 draw at Crewe Alexandra. Alex Newby's 40th-minute strike cancelled out an early opener for the hosts.
Analysing the process
Lindsey told reporters that reviewing performances is essential for progress. "We have to watch it back, we have to understand it, we have to understand data in order for us to keep improving," the York boss said. His team have outshot opponents like Cheltenham Town and Crewe recently without always getting the reward, a trend he wants to address.
The absence of last season's top scorer Josh Stones, who remains injured, is a factor. In his stead, wing-back Harry Boyes has made a spectacular start to life at York. The Barnsley-born defender has contributed two goals and four assists in his first five appearances, form that earned him League Two's Player of the Month award.
Boyes said he has settled quickly. "I've really enjoyed my start to the season, the lads have been brilliant, and I've felt good," he said.
Looking ahead
With a goal difference of plus one, York are four points behind early leaders Bristol Rovers. Their recent form reads two wins, two draws and one defeat from the last five outings.
Attention now turns to a trip to face 17th-placed Chesterfield on September 19. Lindsey's squad will be aiming to convert their patient build-up into a key away victory at the Technique Stadium.
