York City defender Ash Palmer has joined Southend United on a three-month loan deal. The centre-back links up with the National League side and a familiar face in manager Kieron Dyer, whom he previously worked with at Chesterfield.
Palmer has found first-team opportunities limited at York this season, making just three appearances including a late substitute outing against Newport County. He joined the Minstermen in the summer of 2025 after a successful spell at Chesterfield, having also played for Stockport County, Scunthorpe United, and Guiseley earlier in his career.
Southend boss Kieron Dyer was quick to praise his new signing's experience and character. "He's great in both boxes and a real leader, a captain figure without needing to wear the armband," Dyer said. The manager also highlighted Palmer's promotion pedigree, having won promotion from the National League with Stockport, Chesterfield, and York.
The move provides Palmer with a chance for regular football while York manage their defensive resources. The club has been dealing with injuries at centre-back to Morgan Williams and Zech Medley. York boss Scott Lindsey had plans for Palmer that were disrupted by his lack of game time, making the temporary switch a logical step for all parties.
Palmer could make his debut for the Shrimpers against Halifax on Saturday. His loan is set to run until mid-January. For York, the focus remains on their League Two campaign where they sit sixth with 17 points from 11 games, fresh from a 2-0 win over Port Vale. The club's recent form is strong, having taken 13 points from the last available, and they are just one goal minute away from being in the automatic promotion places, with a goal difference of +4. Their next fixture is a home match against Accrington Stanley, providing a chance to build on their positive start to the season. The squad's depth and current standings position provide context for this squad decision as the season progresses. York's league position of sixth is built on a record of four wins, five draws and two losses from their 11 games, with a goal difference of +6 after scoring 19 and conceding 13. They are currently eight points behind the league leaders, Salford City. Their recent form is unbeaten in five, comprising two wins and three draws, a run that includes the 2-0 victory over Port Vale on Saturday 24 October, a 1-1 draw with Accrington Stanley on Tuesday 20 October, a 1-1 draw at Newport County on Saturday 17 October, a 1-1 draw with Northampton on Saturday 10 October, and a 3-0 win over Gillingham on Saturday 26 September. Their next fixture is away to Grimsby on Saturday 31 October.
